National Stress Day – 6th November 2014

Did you know that today is National Stress Awareness Day?

Sponsored by the International Stress Management Association, the aim of the day is to raise awareness of stress and the effect stress has on health, business and productivity and to promote methods of reducing stress.  It is estimated that stress costs the UK economy £60 Billion of £1000 for every man, woman and child.

At Sussex Hypnotherapy and Coaching, we can help both individuals and businesses to identify stress in either a single person or perhaps how stress in the workplace is affecting productivity and interpersonal relationships.

Often workplace stress is cause by poor communication and if that is an issue, our Profile Training website has more information on how we can work with companies to improve internal communication.  On a personal level, coaching and hypnotherapy can identify areas causing stress to a person and work towards addressing these areas and implementing practices that will help reduce the levels of stress and improve feelings of wellbeing.

Please do contact us if you are experiencing stress if if you have concerns about your employees.  You can call us on 01243 251627 or 07778 28711 for a no-obligation chat about how we can help you.

How is your wellbeing?

A recent report commissioned by  health spa chain, Champneys revealed some interesting facts about how men and women view their wellbeing.

The top five concerns in the survey of over 2,000 people were found to be:

Physical Health
Levels of tiredness
Emotional Health
Lack of energy

and yet over a half reported never taking time to look after their own wellbeing.  42% reported feeling a degree of unhappiness about their weight and a staggering 58% reported feeling exhausted some or all of the time.

At Sussex Hypnotherapy and Coaching we can help you to recover your sense of wellbeing by taking a holistic view of your life and finding out your concerns and then working with you using hypnotherapy and coaching to find a balance that leaves you feeling happier, more refreshed and positive.

Please do give me a call on 01243 251627 or 07778 287119 if you would like a no-obligation free chat about how I can help.

Emotional Pain

What is pain?  Physical pain can be compared but what about emotional pain?  The following video is a short presentation I give about the impact of emotional pain.

Emotional pain can build up without being noticed resulting in anxiety related illnesses. Coaching and hypnotherapy can help you to identify where the emotional pain in your life is coming from and give you tools to enable you to deal with the pain you are experiencing.

My book, The Sticking Point looks at this subject even more. It is a simple story about someone who walks in to a world where emotional pain is visible and how it affects him and the people around him. You can buy The Sticking Point on this website by clicking the following link:

Free Hypnotherapy Download

Many people think of hypnotherapy as the sort that you see on the stage, where people are hypnotised in an instant and made to perform embarrassing acts in front of an audience.  This could not be further from the type of hypnosis that we do at Sussex Hypnotherapy and coaching.

Hypnosis is very calming and relaxing.  You are fully aware of your surroundings and are able to respond to external factors should the need arise.

You can now experience a short free hypnotic induction with Steve in order that you can better understand how hypnosis works and feels.  The session lasts for around ten minutes and is purely for you to experience the feeling of relaxation that hypnosis brings.

If you would like to download the sampler, please click on the link below and enter your details in the shop.  The download link will be in your confirmation email.

The pain of shyness

Brain scans have revealed that feelings of loneliness invoke similar brain activity to that which is seen when pain is felt.  There is a saying ‘painfully shy’ and this may not be too far from the truth.

Social anxiety is one reason why people avoid going out and therefore begin to experience feelings of loneliness.  The longer one spends alone, the more fear can develop surrounding going out into social situations and the cycle perpetuates.

Hypnosis and coaching can help you if you have fears or social anxieties by helping you identify the fears you feel and work through ways in which you can become more comfortable thus breaking the cycle and allowing you more freedom.

If you would like to discuss hypnotherapy for shyness, please do get in touch.

The importance of sleep

I read an interesting article this week about how the brain ‘cleans’ itself during sleep. The cells within the brain shrink and this increases the space between the neurons, which in turn allows fluid to ‘wash’ the brain. The Glymphatic System (or Glymphatic Clearance Pathway) works for the Neurological System the way the Lymphatic System works to help rid the body of toxins.

Dr Maiken Nedergaard from the University of Rochester, where the research has been carried out sums it up by saying “The brain only has limited energy at its disposal and it appears that it must choose between two different functional states – awake and aware or asleep and cleaning up”

It is no surprise then that sleep is essential to refresh the body and lack of sleep can make a person feel very tired and irritable. Insomnia can have many causes, some of which can be easily rectified – making sure the room you are sleeping in is quiet and dark, not eating too soon before sleep, avoiding drinking caffeinated drinks close to bedtime. Some medications can interrupt sleep patterns as can some illnesses such as asthma, indigestion, cramp etc. If you feel that these may be a cause then you should speak with your GP.

Other causes are less simple to fix alone – anxieties and stress from your daily life can prevent sleep and the more you try to sleep, the harder it becomes. At Sussex Hypnotherapy and Coaching, we understand the importance of sleep and we work with clients to understand what issues are preventing a good sleep and then with a mixture usually of coaching and hypnotherapy we look at the issues identified and explore ways to reduce the anxieties being felt and also to improve the quality of sleep.

If you would like to have a chat with us about insomnia or any other sleep issues you may be experiencing, please do get in touch for a no-obligation chat.

Study of CBT for health anxiety

The Lancet (The Lancet, Early Online Publication, 18 October 2013) has just published a very interesting study in to the use of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) for people who suffer with health anxiety. This is a common issue both for people who fear illness but who do not have any symptoms or diagnosis (sometime referred to as Hypochondria) and also those who have received a diagnosis and who are excessively fearful about their condition. The results of the study showed that twice as many patients receiving CBT reached normal levels of anxiety after one year than those in the control group not receiving CBT.

You can read the summary of this study on the Lancet Website.

We are trained in CBT as well as coaching and hypnotherapy so if you have any fears, be it about your health or any other aspect of your life, please do get in touch and see if we can help.

Hypnotherapy for spider phobia

It is believed that recent changes in climate conditions have led to a huge increase in the number of False Widow spiders on the South Coast of the UK.  False Widow spiders are a distant relative of the Black Widow Spider found in vast areas of the Globe although they are not native to the UK.  False Widow Spiders have a much less potent venom than the Black Widow and they rarely bite unless they are threatened and their bite generally results in nothing worse than a bee sting.

Fear or phobia of spiders (or Arachnophobia) is a very common problem, indeed most people have some fear to a greater or lesser degree.  At Hypnotherapy Sussex, we can help you if you have a fear of spiders.  Generally this fear or phobia is either learned as a child from an adult with a phobia or maybe from a direct experience either with a spider, an image in the media or similar.  Often the cause of the phobia will be forgotten but will remain in the subconscious mind and be triggered by simply seeing a small, harmless spider or even in severe cases a picture or the mention of a spider is sufficient.

Hypnotherapy speaks to the subconscious mind, which is holding on to the fear and addresses the deep seated feelings that are causing the fear or phobia.  If you have a fear of spiders and you would like to have a no-obligation chat to see how we can help you, please do get in touch.

Hypnotherapy helps fear of flying

Hypnotherapy has been in the news recently as 12 year old Joe Thompson was finally able to return home from Abu Dhabi to the UK after 15 months of being unable to fly due to a crippling phobia.

The family enlisted the help of a hypnotherapist who using a combination of CBT and hypnotherapy was able to accompany Joe home on the flight where he was reunited with his Mother and Sister who had already returned.

At Hypnotherapy Sussex, we can help with your fear of flying.  Trained in Hypnotherapy and CBT we use a combination of techniques to help you overcome your fears.
