When you decide to stop smoking, you have to be aware that there are two distinct aspects to kicking out the dreaded weed: There’s the addiction to nicotine, which can be addressed by many different routes: patches, gum and so on; and there’s the habit itself – the unconscious associations between an action, or perhaps a time of day or social situation and the lighting of a cigarette. And it’s very often the habit that is most stubborn!
Hypnosis is very good at dealing with the habit, and a good hypnotherapist can usually help with the cravings too.
The main thing to remember is that you have to want to give up!
This might sound self-evident, but many people come to see us because they are under pressure from someone else, such as a spouse, a parent or a colleague, to give up. Our job is to talk to you, to establish a background to the habit and to make sure that it’s really you that wants to quit. Once we’ve done that (and there’s no cost to you until we have reached the conclusion that hypnotherapy will be beneficial) we’ll get to work.
Everyone is different, so every treatment is different. Some people respond well to just one session, while others may need two or even three before they’ve finally kicked the habit.
